Point Reyes
Home of 18% of California's wildflower species and 45% of North America's bird species, Point Reyes National Seashore is a wild, rugged coastal refuge for plants and animals, as well as for people looking to get back to nature. Located in the Bay Area's backyard, Point Reyes is amazingly removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life and provides unparalleled views of 80 miles of unspoiled and undeveloped coastline.
This preserve includes Tomales Bay, Point Reyes lighthouse, an informative Visitor's Center and a Native American Miwok interpretive trail and reconstructed village, not to mention estuaries, windswept beaches, coastal scrub grasslands, salt and freshwater marshes, and coniferous forests. It is no wonder that people from all over the world come to see the bountiful nature only found in Point Reyes.
ACTIVITIES
Hiking, kayaking, whale watching, beach games and exploration, swimming in lakes and ponds, visiting waterfalls, service projects, and tasting quality cheese are a few of the activities you can enjoy in and near Point Reyes!
This is a great place for a truly unique wilderness experience for the beginning adventurer.
Hiking - With 147 miles of hiking trails for visitors to explore, the possibilities are vast! There are options for day hikes, overnight, and multi-day trips within Point Reyes which allow you explore the diverse landscapes found here. You can hike to beaches, lakes, waterfalls, mountains, valleys where Tule elk are found grazing, and along the rugged coastal cliffs (always properly supervised as safety comes first!). Developed campsites with potable water are found throughout the park.
Service Opportunities - Help remove non-native plant species that are crowding out their native neighbors while learning about biodiversity; or, help maintain and repair trails and facilities at the Miwok Native American village while learning about Native cultures of the region.
Kayaking - Tomales Bay is a beautiful place for a day or two of kayaking to visit remote beaches. Watch for whales, bat rays, harbor seals, native Tule elk, and other natural wonders of this beautiful park. If on an overnight adventure, you can camp on a private beach and fall asleep listening to the incredible peace and calmness of the water gently crashing on shore.
Tide Pooling - Just outside Point Reyes is Agate Beach, a great spot for low-tide exploration! We look but don't disturb these sea creatures which include sea anemones, sea cucumbers, star fish, and crabs.
